MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) are gaining more and more popularity as online users look for a new way to connect with their favorite sports. If you want to create your own player(s) and control their training and watch their stats, the best sites are goallineblitz.com & courtrivals.com. GLB is for Football (american football) lovers and courtrivals is the basketball equivalent. I'm on both and i promise you won't be disappointed in either of them. The sites are well-run and constantly updated and millions use both. GLB is actually the MOST POPULAR MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) on the internet (check alexa) and courtrivals is the hottest upcoming mmorpg after gaining popularity a little over a year ago. Both are the top sites in their respective sports so get to it!

TOP 200 (TWO HUNDRED) RAP/HIP HOP SONGS of ALL-TIME

"Though I do think that some artistes seemingly got preference on this list (appeared too many times) this list is a pretty good indication of the best rap/hip hop songs ever. As with ANY greatest rap/hip hop songs of all-time chart, there will be disagreements as to which songs should have been on it, however, I believe the rap songs which were obvious classics such as "Fight The Power", "Ain't Nuthin' But A G Thang", "Rapper's Delight", "Keep Ya Head Up", "T.R.O.Y.", "The Message", "Walk This Way", "Children's Story", "Gangsta's Paradise", "Just A Friend", "FUck The Police", "It Was A Good Day" ETC. ETC. ETC. all appeared on this list."
- Xavier Thompson

NOTICEABLE (& InExcusable) ABSENTEE SONGS (This list has some real BLUNDERS):
"Crossroads" by Bone Thugs n Harmony (Fucking INEXCUSABLE)
"Gin and Juice" & "What's My Name (Snoop Doggy Dogg)" by Snoop Dogg (How the fuck could these two have been left of the list?)
"Ruff Ryder's Anthem" & "Party Up" by DMX
"Jump Jump" by Kris Kross
"Jump Around" by House Of Pain
"Real Muthafuckin Gs" by Eazy E
"Rump Shaker" by Wrecks N' EffeXX (Spelt wrong I kNOW)
Also very noticeable that there were NO SONGS from Mase nor Ja Rule

To make up for such HORRENDOUS OMISSIONS ... The VH1 100 GREATEST HIP HOP Songs has also been included.

I don't mean to split hairs TRock, but the Beastie Boys are totally on the list (#27). Read first, then complain.

Speaking of complaints, if any Beastie Boys song belongs on the list it's "Paul Revere." And PE's "Rebel Without a Pause" is better than "Fight the Power" by about 50 miles. Hell, they have at least ten songs better than "Fight the Power."

I guess I can understand just one song per artist, but at least get it right. "One Love" isn't even the best song on Illmatic, much less the best Nas song ever. And no "You're A Customer" by EPMD? Kill yourself VH-1.

This was possibly the wackest list I have ever seen. First of all, I love PE but them having a song that is number one....NO! and if I was picking a song for them it would be something like Black steel in the hour of chaos. But this list has Bust the move on it. Any song that comes before that on the list makes the list irrelevant. Then they have Tupac's I get around?...what?.... What about Dear Mamma, Ain't Mad 'Cha, Hail Mary... and personally the best rap song of all time So Many Tears....that song is wicked.... this list sucks... I got knock off 75 songs off this list before I could say it has relevance...

Ok you gotta give credit to the beastie boys they were true pioneers for white rap, but eminem WAS and still is the greatest white rapper alive, the beastie boys could rap bout there day to day shit and having fun. Eminem catches people hearts his lyrics speak a long with everybody else on the top twenty, that is the difference between good hip hop and great hip hop

Why do people INSIST on saying that hip hop and rap are different? "Hip Hop" refers to a cultural movement and "rap" is the music of that culture. Saying, "I like Hip Hop" is just short for saying, "I like Hip Hop music" which is long for saying, "I like rap".

End of story.

No, it's much different, as KRS put it, rap is something you DO, while hip hop is something you LIVE..and i agree that alotta these tracks on here are just commercialized rap songs that probably will lose favor in years to come.

Agreed, musicunderfire. I've said this for a while, but I wish Mos Def would stop with the acting and help Kweli save hip hop. They seriously snubbed AZ by putting One Love on this list. I don't disagree with the number one song, but I had The Message first and Rapper's Delight second. You gots to chill at number 74? No Redman? Shimmy Shimmy Ya is on the list? This list is extremely flawed. But, what do you expect when you have rich old white people picking the songs?

I guess I see why VH1 doesn't really play hip-hop cuz they don't know anything...Eric B and Rakim "My Melody" is not even on the list!?!?!? I think Scorl3y's top 10 is much much better. WTF was the criteria? Some of the VH1 picks didn't even have decent lyrics, memorable beats, or the longevity for consideration.

When's BETs Top 100 come out?? ;)

Great songs that are missing are Glamorous Life by Cool C, My Part of Town by Tuff Crew,I'm Bad by LL Cool J, Jam on It by Newcleus, I'll House Ya by The Jungle Brothers,It's Tricky by RunDmc,Poison by BBD,and Paul Rever by The BeastieBoys. Take the following off the list L'Trimm(sorry Tigre and Bunny),PeteRock and Cl Smooth , ColdCrushBrothers , Common , SpoonieG , LittleWayne and Funky 4 + 1. Some songs on list aren't even the best song by the artist, Kool Moe Dee's best song is WilWildWest,Tupac's best song is California Love, Sir Mixalot's best song is Posse on Broadway. Curtis Blowe's best song is Basketball, and PE's best song is Rebel without a Pause.

Aside from only including one song per artist (not including "featurings") is idiotic, and the one song chosen for each artist is occasionally ridiculous, but those are things I'd expect from VH1. Otherwise... not nearly as awful as I would've imagined. I was expecting much, much worse.

the list is interesting. Even though I'm not a fan myself, it's weird seeing songs by T.I and Kanye West because they are still so recent.

A list of the 100 greatest hip hop songs of all time is arbitrary though at this point in the music. Rap has been around long enough that it contains way more than 100 songs. They maybe should have chosen a certain time period or looked at the most "influential" songs (i.e. self destruction, the bridge is over, f@#% the police, etc) making it like a historical thing.

although given that it's just a list randomly selected by people who (read?) watch VH1, you can't really complain, it's a pretty good playlist to put on at a party anyways

First off, Triumph by teh Wu Tang Clan is easily the best rap song of all time. Easily.

Also, I'm a little disappointed that Mos Def didn't make the list. Ms. Fat Booty is a great hip hop song.

And speaking of omissions, I counted at least 3 variations of Lil' on the list and not one of them is the only necessary Lil', Lil' Wayne.

Lastly, I'm at a loss for words why Killing Me Softly is the choice from the Fugees. A) It's not even their song, and
B) It's hardly even a hip hop song, and
C) There are several truly outstanding hip hop songs on that album to choose from.

Most of the comments to this post are absolutely ridiculous, this is not a list of your favorite rap songs. It is a list of what VH-1 believes are the 100 best songs objectively.

The thing that gets me is that so many critics place albums like Nas-Illmatic, Eric B. and Rakim, and Jay-z's first album very high on lists; however, songs from these albums are not represented very well by VH-1.

I suppose i would place both Nas and De La Soul much higher on the list based on where they are usually placed on other countdowns...Suggesting Salt-n-pepa have the 9th best rap song of all time seems a little off.

what makes your comment so less ridiculous? you say nothing more in your post than others who have posted. Best song objectively? what criteria do they use here to make an objective decision? production quality? lyrics? flow/cadence? None of this was taken into account obviously. People are simply expressing their distaste with a rather vague list and some rather random selections and placements.

your right this is not supposed to be a list of anybodys favorite songs but if the title of the list is 100 greatest hip hop songs the best songs should be on that list. the bridge, ladi dodi and my melody aren't on this list. those songs are legendary. they would make anybodys top 10 let alone top 100. how about mob deep's "cradle to the grave" or even "survival of the fitest" nothing from raekwon's "only 4 cuban linx" album, please. krs one's "the mc" easy top 100 song. just-ice "cold getting dumb" or "latoya". if you don't know what i'm talking about or if you never heard these songs, down load them and then defend this list. while you are at it look up "sitting on chrome" by master ace. "my posse is on broadway" by sir mix alot, "south bronx" krs one, "nobody move" eazy e, "jack the ripper" "you'll rock"LL cool J, "cappucino" mc lyte, "saturday night" schoolly d, "beats to the rhyme" RUN DMC, "it's yours" T la rock. happy listening. that's hip hop

I'm pretty sure the world is tired of VH1 assuming they're musically savvy and releasing some of the most silly lists... yeah.

Especially since they apparently had this unwritten rule that there can't be more than one song from an artist, which I think is silly because it underwrites some of the extensive achievements of certain artists in this genre. I mean, why do we have to make room for people like Salt-N-Pepa? Sir Mix Alot? 2 Live Crew?

SO, kids who spend their days watching VH1 and assuming they are musically savvy will assume that Hard Knock Life is his best song. Or that One Love is Nas's.

Granted, I do enjoy Juicy high on the list. Not so much Salt-N-Pepa in the Top 10.

The weird part of this list is that an artist can only be represented once. Doesn't make much sense, really, since some acts have a lot of songs that belong on the list. That also throws out the idea that this list is an objective ranking of hip hop's best songs...since objectively Dre, Eminem, Public Enemy, Outkast, Jay-Z, Nas, and company should have a couple in the top 100.

This list is full of fucking terrible songs.

Also, the rote praise for critics' darlings Public Enemy was entirely predictable and confirms that some fruitcake Spin critics who know nothing about hip-hop were responsible for compiling the list. Not that PE was bad, but it's annoying that fucking landmark stuff like the Ultramagnetic MCs' "Critical Beatdown" came out the same year as "It Takes a Nation of Millions", but is barely ever mentioned by critics.

Does anyone remember the Spin magazine "Punk Issue" in 2000? They had a list of the supposed best punk albums of all time, and it was just as bad as this.

Jeru The Damaja's song:Can't stop the prophet is #2
Oh no their going to try and cut my hair;but that can't stop the prophet.

This is a list of songs for a show in which clips from the song are played and comedians and musicians comment on the songs. So, first of all, the songs all need to have music videos, and not every song you guys have mentioned have videos. Secondly, the term "great" is obviously subject to bias. Your idea of a good song and my idea of a good song are very different. So don't get bent out of shape over such silly things like this. I've enjoyed watching part of the countdown just for hearing some really old songs I haven't heard in a long time and also for hearing some of the commentary on the videos.

They should have called this list "Top 100 Rap Songs White People (Who Probably Don't Know Too Many Black People) Like Doing at Karaoke Nights" Then 'Rapper's Delight,' 'Baby Got Back,' 'Bust a Move,' 'The Humpty Dance,' and 'U Can't Touch This' would belong there.

Pac is the considered the best even a legend so he has to have more songs on the list as well as jay-z, nas, eminem, dre, B.I.G, and wu-tang......what the hell is wrong with vh1. i can think at least 50 other number 1 songs besides public enemys fight the power. do ur research and listen to me against the world track # 12-Old Skool......pac practically advised vh1 who should be on the list.....i mean really helped them, who could disagree with that song.vh1 is so not hip-hop they should really reconsider doing this list over. it sux big time.

This list is a bunch of BS. They need to rename the list: 100 Greatest RAP Songs. Granted there are some respectable artists in this list, but the song choices seem to be nothing but the singles that got/get radio play. Looks like someone at VH1 doesn't listen to Hip Hop albums, but Rap singles.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Pharcyde. Take any song off of Bizarre Ryde and put it in the top 20. Even "Jiggaboo Time" is better than half the stuff on this list. And no Dizzee or solo Wu-Tang? For shame.

Through the ft. loophole, 50 Cent is on here more than A Tribe Called Quest, Eric B. & Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan and its affiliates, Public Enemy, etc.... The rock list had like seven songs by the Beatles. This one song per artist deal seems like a bunch of scared white people trying to be diplomatic. It's easier to say which artists are better or more deserving than others when you don't play their videos any more.

Bottom line: bullshit.

As you guys should have read in the comments prior to the ones you all posted, THERE IS ONLY ONE SONG PER ARTIST ON THIS LIST. And, once again, the songs were chosen for a TV show which means that they all need music videos, not every song you guys are saying should be on the list has a music video, which would probably indicate why it isn't on the list. Also, this is obviously a biased list, and it is impossible to please everyone with this list. The creators, it seems, tried to take many songs from different styles and eras of hip hop, from the silly Will Smith raps to the more serious songs. So, clearly every song on this list can be argued for or against, depending on your taste. So, seriously, stop getting so angry at a list.

I got a problem that Tupac is represented by a ok song but not his best. VH1 should stop letting the public select for these countdowns and let folks who actually specialize in hip hop pick this. NaS is entirely to low. Not only that Nelly is a good rapper but doesnt deserve to be as high as he is.

Tupac - California Love, Dear Mama, Keep Ya Head Up
Biggie - Big Poppa, One More Chance, Hypnotize, Get Money, Mo Money Mo Problems
Nas - If I Ruled The World, One Mic, The World Is Yours, I Can
Jay-Z - Izzo, Song Cry, Big Pimpin'
Outkast - Elevators, Rosa Parks, Ms. Jackson, Player's Ball
Naughty By Nature - Hip Hop Hooray, Feel Me Flow
Dr Dre & Snoop Dogg - Deep Cover
Dr. Dre - Let Me Ride, Forgot About Dre
Oueen Latifah - U.N.I.T.Y.
Fugees - Fu-Gee-La
LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out, Doin It, Lougin'
Busta Rhymes - Put Your Hands Were My Eyes Can See
Scarface - Smile, My Block
Ice Cube - Check Yourself
Pharcyde - Passin Me By
Luniz - I Got 5 On It

just a few songs that should've easily made this list. They really shouldn't allow their viewers and readers vote for this list, since their demographic apparently doesn't know ANYTHING about hip hop. A middle aged white woman from Idaho probably could've made a better list than this one.

All of your questions are legit, but no one seems to take into consideration that VH1 polled their readers for the greatest songs, so if you didn't voice your opinion or if there weren't others that had the same perspective then it wasn't represented, unfortunately. The best thing about Hip Hop is this room for debate. No one said VH1 was the end all and be all on Hip Hop. But, at least they're giving some of the founding figures the forum to share their experiences as well as their perspectives on each other's music. It was good to hear what Naughty by Nature, Prince Paul, MC Serch, Grandmaster Flex, Pete Rock (among others) speak their minds on each song.

2 major problems with this list.
1. One or two songs by artists. This is a bad approach, there are some artists (Run DMC, 2Pac, LL, Tribe, Rakim, Outkast) that have MULTIPLE classic songs in hip-hop and if this list is truly comprehensive, most of those songs are too important to not be included.
2. There are just some obvious f*ck-ups. "I Used to Love H.E.R." "Children's Story," and "T.R.O.Y." are all in the bottom 50? Under such crap as "Oh Boy" and "U Can't Touch This"

I like the fact they are doing a countdown like this. Yeah, I don't care for a lot of the choices, but it's nice to see what some of the old school guys (and girls) are doing.

I see everyone splitting hairs over what songs should/shouldn't be on, so let me add to that: Any list without Gang Starr's "Mass Appeal" is probably not done in real serious fashion.

In any event, you know who I hope watches this show? Today's rap artists. Maybe I'm dating myself, but at 31 I remember a time where rap was inspiring and touched a lot of nerves and really represented something. It had meaning, which is a pretty violent contrast to what comes out today. Maybe it's bc I'm older, but I don't think that's it...

Why is everyone trippin if your really a fan of hip hop you know that VH1 has no credability in even having an opinion in hip hop they never played 90 percent of the songs on their list when these songs were actually popular and now all of a sudden they think they should have an opinion. I liked watchin what the artists thought about the songs and some of the songs brought back great memories but when I was commin up VH1 was on some modonna and michael bolton type of stuff so who cares what they think. If it weren't for YO mtv raps and the box we would have never seen half these videos.

Jay shoulda had Regrets... matter of fact, Anything from Reasonable doubt, i woulda took Feelin It if they were doing singles. He coulda even had something off of the blueprint like Song Cry or girls girls girls. Nas coulda had One Mic or Undying Love or Ether. He really coulda had it ain't hard to tell or if they wanted singles they shoulda chose if i rule the world or made you look. Kane shoulda had Raw, thats like the hardest old school joint. yeah umm this list is alright... But, I really think that this list could be better. Everybody knows that old shool rap is damn better than new school. I think that VH1 put these shit new school songs on to appeal to present day viewers. But, still questioning the choices. I only agree upon maybe Hate It Or Love It, and Ridin', but why the fuck is Fat Joe and Lil' Jon on this this? This supposed to be the 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs. So why the hell are these guys on here. I do agree with some of the songs, but not all of them. Where is the Wu-Tang Clan? I mean, they got C.R.E.A.M., and Shimmy Shimmy Ya, and Your'e All I Need To Get By, but cmon they got other songs. Plus, why they got I Get Around by Tupac? I thought Changes is far better than that. Straight Outta Compton is good, but Fuck The Police is a more powerful song, (probably as powerful as Fight The Power). They got only one Eric B. & Rakim song? Whats with that??? And no Gang Starr? Mass Appeal and Ex Girl To Next Girl are top 20 material. A Tribe Called Quest's Can I Kick It? I hate how there's Three Six Mafia is on here. One Beastie Boys song? One Nas song? And why the fuck is Regulate only 98? This list is alright, but there's alot missing...........

What you guys are not realizing, is that the list isnt based on just how popular the songs were, or how catchy the beat is.

Lyrical content is also a huge factor, lyrics that preach the true meaning of hip-hop, growing up in the hood, "makin it"

This list was terrible. I can't believe Common, Black Sheep, and even Warren G didn't even hit the top 50. Don't get me wrong, The Choice is Yours is like Top 20 material, and I used to love H.E.R. should have been in the top ten at least.

They got the wrong Tupac song in the Top 20, Salt-N-Pepa is too high up on the list, and where is O.C.'s Time's Up??? That song means more now that it did back in 94.

It's not like I was expecting a very good list in the first place, but putting Lil Wayne or 50 above CL Smooth or The Roots is a disgrace even for MTV. I expected better.

What d hell!!! What happened to mobb deep " Shook Ones". That list is wack!!! They didnt pick the songs correctly! Another thing is that more biggie and tupac songs should be there. There are other songs by them that easily overtakes those other wack songs on the list..Where is "How do you want it" and "California Love" by tupac and " Big Poppa" amd "One more chance by Biggie. Tupac and Biggie should be listed more since they are the greatest...PERIOD.

A couple of things.... Without question....la di da di should be on that list. Why you may ask.......two years before it was released everybody knew the lyrics...even the vanessa williams part whic was left off the record !!! How may people even knew about that verse!! Another thing...I totally agree with P.E. having the top spot....but not with fight the power....welcome to the terrordome !!! Someone said that emimnem should be replaced with the beastie boys....peep game when russell simmons sold def jam.....he kept the masters to the beastie boys...but Em is clearly the greatest rapper of our time....its been 5 long ass years....and you know he has a story to tell ...his life has changed ....we ARE waiting !! But to have JJ fad and l trimm ? on this list and no Just-ice !!!!! Those are commercialists making this list......Just-ice ruled the game for two summers........with Latoya and the joint with mantronix.....And how is the song that svaed hip hop not on this list ? Sucka mc's is not on the list but you have cant touch this ? No disrespect to Hammer but that was more pop than hip hop !!!! No KOOL G rap ? I will say one thing though .....Queens New york RULES that list !!!!

I wanna talk shit about this list so bad but I will refrain and just rejoice because at least they got the #1 song right...A song that is sung by a group that defines a time when hip hop was really really good. Well ok..maybe one complaint...my philosophy should of been number 2
Posted by: sean at 10/03/08 11:24 PM | Reply

I agree with the "My Philosophy" that song is one of the best songs ever made. I remember when that song debuted on Yo!MTV Raps on Saturday with Fab Five Freddy and KRS-One was talking about carrying on BDP without Scott LaRock. Then the video came on toward the end of the show and the highlight of the video is when they took the music out and just heard KRS' lyrics. That was a big deal then because he was an MC that has something important to say and the lyrics were razor sharp the entire song. I disagree with Public Enemy as number 1 tho because, I felt Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos was their best song but fight the power should have been on the list.

This is basically a list of some of the most popular Hip Pop hits. Come on most of these songs were big hits but by no means great. There are some major hip hop songs that have been omitted just because they are not mainstream hits. More Black Star, Nas, Wu Tang, and Tribe Called Quest songs deserve to be on here. Where is Murs, MF Doom, early Atmosphere,. The Cold Vein album from Can. Ox is of the best hip hop albums ever, where is Iron Galaxy. There are some good choices here, but they left out some really good music just to put big name pop songs on the list. Would anyone expect anything different though.

I guess my main problems with the list, besides "the rediculous one song per artist rule!!!" oh and the fact that "Shook Ones" didnt make the list let alone any Mobb Deep, but they put alot of that funny MC Hammer type crap up there!!! VH1 should jus say top 100 selling joints of all time or something along them lines!! We all see the list was a joke tho... Too many songs that deserve to be here are far out of order!!!! -Anyways...

-Get Low? -Had no right to be on the list!!! Not even Hip-Hop!!!!
-The Block is Hot? -Love the song but not even a #50 spot out of 200 let alone top 100!! I might put "A Millie" there.. maybe! Classic production!!!!
-Make em Say Ugh? -Nawwwww!!! Fun song but not Hip-Hop enough!!!!
-Lapdance? -Pharrell and them can't even spit tho! That song isn't even a classic!!!
-Oh Boy? -I like this but not even for the top 100.. He does have some classics tho!! What happened Killa?! U fallin 6 feet brotha!!
-Hott in Here? -Hell no, maybe Country Grammer!
-Gold Digger? -#20?? I love Kanye but this isnt even HIS #20!!! What about, "A Falls --Down," or "Jesus Walks??" Or what about, "Can't tell Me Nothin?" Way more Hip-Hop!!!!!!
-In da Club? -MAYBE between 80-100!!! I guess.. But "Many Men" is the best thing this man has ever done!!!!!!!
-What you know? -T.I. is nice but not this song!!!!

To be totally honest with you, this list is missing some of the dopest songs in hip-hop. Props for putting the P.E. song at #1. But where's Main Source, Brand Nubian, Tupac, and all the other artists named in the comments section that are ostensibly missing...which leads me to think that VH1 made this list in part to stir up some dust and engage interest for their 2008 Hip Hop Honors show airing on the 9th. The 198 (199, including mine) comments is a testament. They're anticipating a viral response. And it's working. I can't tell you how many bloggers have made posts about this. Keep feeding the machine y'all ;-)

Lil Jon? Cam'ron? Nelly? Terror Squad? You're kidding me right? I nearly fainted when I saw "Lean Back" a spot ahead of Busta Rhymes' "Woo-Ha! Got You All in Check." Who's going to remember Fat Joe in 10 years? NO ONE. "If You Must" by Del Tha Funkee Homosapien needs to be on this list REALLY badly. It's definitely a glaring omission. Also, I'd like to see some Rage Against the Machine, but I'm not sure they qualify because of the Rap-Metal thing, even though Zach de la Rocha has more flow than half the people on this and is almost as angry as Chuck D.

Big Poppa, hit em up, hypnotize, mo money mo problems, california love. ALL those songs should be on there. not to mention some dre joints, and can I get a fuck you. i could do with another eminem song also. take off TI, .Lil Wayne, chamillionaire...those guys don't hold a candle to biggie, pac, dre, em, nwa, public enemy, etc.

There was no Gangstarr, Blackmoon, Souls of Mischief, or Pharcyde, what a crime and dont get me started on Pete Rock and CL's 'T.R.O.Y' not being in the #1 spot or at least top 3

There are definitely some great songs on that list -- BOB, Rappers Delight, OPP, The Message, Walk This Way, and Push It all come to mind. but what the fuck, i mean there are really just some bs calls here. Gold digger? I'd put through the wire, jesus walks, hell, even touch the sky before that song. and what the HELL is up with 2pacs song being 'I get around'? anybody heard of California Love, or Changes maybe? (Actually, Thugz Mantion acoustic is my favorite by him, but I think that songs a little under the rader).
Used to Love HER should be ranked higher, Nas has some shit (the Message comes to mind again) that should be on here, I'm lookin for Brass Monkey or Sabotoge by Beastie Boys, Mama said Knock you out by LL, and anything (ANYTHING) by KRS.
but other than that, good list.

I just loved how they said that De La Soul never repeated the success of Me, Myself and I.... I think they forgot about Ring Ring Ring.........

The list was horrible but that's what happens when you give people a list of songs and tell them to vote on them. Anyone happen to see the VIBE "Greatest Rapper Alive" thing? It was the same crap, give people a list and let them vote. It was missing very notable MC's. Soulja Boy vs Eminem !! - who comes up with this shit?

Most of the people voting probably never heard half the songs VH1 listed. Soulja Boy said during the show that the first hip hop record he bought was 50 Cent. Soulja Boy probably voted for this list and as we all saw with his Ice-T youtube feud, he's a moron and doesn't know shit about hip hop.

And I thought that Outkast's "Hey Ya" is suppose to be the biggest song of the decade? I love "BOB", but really, be fair, this was more of a "pay" tribute to the most popular or favorite hip hop artists. If it was a real best songs list then half these songs would not be on here, and Public Enemy, Tupac, Ice T, and even Eminem would have two or more songs on here!!

I can only thank them for not putting "Ice Ice Baby" on here!

I know I'm 2pac bias but lets face it he's the greatest rapper of all time. But this list is so wrong that vh1 should just scrap it and call it a day, I love "I get around" but there was better songs like "changes", "california love", "shed so many tears", "keep your head up" and the list goes on and on see why he's the greatest of all time but "DEAR MAMA" should of been #1 really what song takes you through someone's whole life while showing love to his mom and all the moms in the world.

alright, first of all, people dont realize, usually when vh1 does lists like these, they only use each artist once (with a few exceptions in this list, ll cool j, run dmc), second of all, they need songs with videos. they only chose singles. and third of all, its a tv channel created list, it has to be somewhat commercial.

and everybody stop riding 2pacs dick, he is way to overrated just because he died. (though i do agree it should've been one of his different songs, but still). im not saying the dude aint great, but will you guys please get the fuck over him, there are plenty of people who in my opinion are better than him. (like big l, who for some stupid reason wasn't even on this list).

anyway, everybody please stop posting the same stupid comments.

only thing that i do agree with that everyone has already said, is SHOOK ONES NEEDS TO BE ON HERE. like for real, does vh1 hate this song or something? it wasn't on the list for the100 greatest songs of the 90s either. you cant tell me that song wasnt famous, fuckin everybody knew it, and it definitley influenced hip hop in alot of ways. i always hear it sampled and mentioned by other rappers, its loved in the hip hop community, so why isnt it on there? its a classic.

If the guys at MTV (younger and know less music) did this instead of VH1 (older wishing a new Kurt Cobain song would come out), we'd see Bruce Willis and Justin Timberlake talking about hip hop instead of Ice T and Sir Mix A Lot! They would take out great artists like Tribe Called Quest, Black Star, and The Roots and have Kid Rock, Limp Bizcut, and LInkin Park in the countdown. And the show would've been hosted by Ryan Seacrest!

I Need Love (LL)
Electric Relaxation (ATCQ a.k.a. the greatest hip-hop group ever)
Fight For Your Right (Beastie Boys)

Lean Back being on the list is crazy. One Love as Nas's best? More like One Mic. One Jay-Z is terrible. They shouldn't have had just one song per artist if they were goin to do it for real. I didn't even see The Symphony on there and that's one of the best songs ever. VH1 dropped the ball big time and had to have let down a lot of hip hop true fans.

So there is no Gangstarr, Mad Lib, Quasimoto, Souls of Mischief, People under the Stairs, Heiroglyphics or Aceyalone. I did see that Blackstarr made it as well as del la soul, Common and black sheep. At least they have a couple of good ones. There does need to be an edit on this list and a definition of what "Hip Hop" is. There is a difference between Rap and Hip Hop. Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne is not hip hop. When all you are talking about is killing people and how much money you have, it usually is not hip hop. That is just my opinion. They obviously think much different than me.

Don't whine so much fools, its the most popular song (Or songs) of an artist that gets on there, and it's a voting thing so most folks like those songs, your opinion doesn't matter to that obvious majority and its' the song that gave the artist their biggest cash flow (or one of their bigger) that makes it on the list

"Oh No!" What a good call!! such a jam. no blackstar? no talib ("get by," anyone?) ? no mos? this just gets weirder and weirder. Especially for a yuppie's guide to hip-hop.

That said, these lists are always flawed. What criteria did they use to judge the best HIP-HOP songs ever? beat? MC performance? lyrics? should be a combo of all three, and Li'l John should've been disqualified on all 3 counts.

I think all hip-hop heads, old and new, can see that there is a lot of trash on here, but for a website vote I am pleasingly shocked at the inclusion of stuff like Roxanne Shante (Cross Yourself)! and Kurtis Blow. I may be mistaken but I didn't see on here Lil Wayne or Young Jeezy or whatever their blody names are. A quick look also seemed to show LL Cool J on here twice but no-one else.... so the one-song-per-artist rule obviously doesn't apply, so why not more PE, EPMD, or TCQ?

For the most part, it seems like Vh1 just put this list on shuffle. You know the list is a failure when Cam'Ron comes right before "They Reminisce Over You". And "Paid In Full", which epitomizes hip-hop, has got to be in the top 10. I don't understand why they picked "What They Do" as The Roots' single song, "What's Your Fantasy" as Ludacris's, or "I Need Love" as one of LL Cool J's. And I understand they're trying to incorporate modern styles (Lil' Jon, Lil' Wayne) into the list, but the fact is there are sooo much better hip-hop artists of today than the Lil's. And honestly, Public Enemy are legendary, but I don't see why "Fight the Power" is number one (although it should be in the top 10), other than the fact it's one of the most influential records of rebellion of all time.

Mr. Big Stuff - Heavy D

If anything else, this list should be a reminder to all Hip-Hop fans to try to remember the good Hip Hop that we grew up with. I watched all those crappy five hours on my DVR so I could make a killer mixtape of my childhood memories. Its is a learning lesson for the Hip Hop Scholars.

Plus, how else are we ever gonna remember how hard we rocked "Gas Face" from 3rd Bass during school recess. (F "pop geos the weasel") Recognize.

What cracks me up is that if u watch the program on VH1, u can tell which songs the commentators are passionate about and which one they really don't care too much for. Like every one was ecstatic about T.R.O.Y. and some said the best song ever but it only was #90. But when it came to Puff Daddy and 50's In the Club they just said quick comments and left it at that.
I'm sure VH1 didn't tell them the rank of the songs before the interviews.

I find it funny how Eminem's "Lose Yourself" is #4 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the past 25 years, and yet it's not even on the greatest hip-hop list. If they are going to continue to put out these stupid lists, they should at least all coordinate with each other. They just look stupid.

these r the songs i think shouldnt b there
93 N.E.R.D. ft. Lee Harvey and Vida - "Lapdance"
89 Cam'ron - "Oh Boy"
80 Three 6 Mafia ft. Paula Campbell- "Hard Out Here For A Pimp"

It's not the best list in my opion. But that's just my opion. I do think VH1 did a good job with this list because it showed the greatness in Hip Hop. I agree with other that maybe they did put up the best song for some artist but the list had that artist on the list. I just wish Gang Starr was on the list. "Dwyck" would have showed love for Gang Starr and Nice and Smooth. And no Redman, "time 4 sum aksion" I coach high school football and my player are still listening to that song to hype them up for games 15 years after it came out. I think "summertime" by Will Smith should have made the top 10. When it because spring time in the northeast all the hip hop station start playing that track. It gets radio play every year. That has to make it a top ten hip hop song after all theses years.

This is corporate America running this(VH1) just like everything else today, they should let people from the ages of 35-40 and from the real world construct this list,it would look totally different from this garbage!

This list is completely lopsided. Had everyone that is over 40 voited, then the list in the 1-20 range would be quite different.

You left off "I Go To Work!, Kool Moe Dee". "Wild Thing - Ton Loc" and "Can't touch this is not in the top 20 . . . this is definitely some pay-ola going on in the voting.

Truth told, "Rappers Delight - Sugar Hill" is the number one. "The Brakes - Curtis Blow" is number two.

I agree about Mobb Deep "Shook Ones Part II." That beat was a classic beat that is used on so many mixtapes it should b possibly in the top 10. Nas' "One Mic" or "If I Ruled the World" should be on there not "One Love." Lil Wayne is garbage and so is Lil Jon and Missy Elliot. 50 and Nelly should b lower and Sugar Hill's "Rapper's Delight" should b #1. Biggies "Juicy" should b higher and Pac should have "Hail Mary" "Broken Wings" or even "Dear Mama" on there. I never even heard of that other song until this countdown had it.

I actually think "one love" is the weakest song off Illmatic (not that i would skip over it)
someone said it b4 but "represent" is the best song off of illmatic.

no gang starr? that's an "ouch" for vh1 for sure...gotta have some Jeru too...anybody who says jeru doesn't deserve to be on the list probably hasn't listened to jeru

the problem with this list is that there needs to be a 100 or 50 Best Albums list, because songs don't do any artist justice, and it's way too difficult to pick out one song

if it was albums

1. It Takes a Nation of Millions
2. Illmatic
3. 36 chambers
4. low end theory
5. chronic
6. 3 feet high and rising
7. daily operation
8. straight outta compton
9. 93 til infinity
10. sun rises in the east

the list is bogus. a lot of these songs are recent and you have to ask yourself in 20 years will this song still be remembered? I don't think many will be. The Show at number 51?? Please, you can go to any club today and when they play it everyone will get out on the dance floor. It has to be in the the top ten. Where's five minutes of funk?

This list should be named the "Mainstream Hip Hop Top 100"! At least they have De La and Black Star at the very least. This list is outdated and commercialized, it's missing so many gems it actually hurts. The very first post was at least on top of things with the lack of Beastie Boys tracks which is pathetic. Let me make the next list and I think we could get something accomplished.

agreed with mike da god as far as gang starr goes.....you cant have anything to do with hip hop without guru and premier. i also see alot of comment about no pharcyde on the list....agree with that too. personally i think CREAM was a weak(er) wu song compared to others (Protect Ya Neck, Da mystery of chessboxin), but i can appreciate that vh1 wasnt ignorant enough to exclude them from the list. lame, shallow ass list, though

Also, LL Cool J has 2 songs on there which i have no problem with, but how is Momma said knock you out not one of them. JUICY! of all Biggie songs, why not hypnotize or get money or dead wrong. As much as i hate him, lil wayne's best song is go dj and why the hell is that not on there, plus NO BIG TYMERS. Where was Top Billin' by Audio Two? That is one of the most timeless jams.

Eric B. & Rakim's had two distinct type of songs, lyrically insane laid back and lyrically insane battlerap. There should have been two songs by Eric B. and Rakim: "As The Rhyme Goes On" for laid back and "Lyrics of Fury" for battlerap.

And one more thing: "You Gots To Chill" is NOT EPMD's best song. Their best song is and always will be "So What Cha Sayin'". Their Unfinished Business album was the debut of DJ Scratch, one of the best DJs ever.

I think "Reasonable Doubt" is one of the best Albums of all time, and that isn't being hip-hop restrictive, and it doesn't get a song on the top 100? And Fugees "Killing Me Softly"? That isn't a hip-hop song. It's an amazing R&B cover, but doesn't belong on this list. How about "Ready or Not" instead? Also, I'm really enjoying all the posts reminding me about songs I've forgotten!

This list has songs that had a significant stand at the time of the release of the song which is why you see Hammer on this list. The songs that had an impact and or influence on a rapper or kids. Beatie Boys had better songs than Hold it now, hit it. That sing is weak compared to other Beastie songs. And fyi, Beastie Boys are better than any other Black Rapper.

Heavy D is a legend first of all and should be respected as such. Second of all, KRS-One and Scott La Rock are the two members of Boogie Down Productions (#49). Granted, i can think of a dozen KRS/BPD songs better than My Philosophy and most of this awful list. No Onyx? Jurassic 5? STAN!? At least pick a good Eminem Song ffs. No Das EFX. No De La Soul. And I'm sorry, it doesnt matter how influential it was; 'The Message' does not deserve to be in the top 50. Chuck D is good, but not better than Nas, Big, Pac and Jay. Overrall, this list looks like several of the "music specialists" at VH1 sat down over a beer and some Billboard Chart data and came up with a half-assed list of songs they liked/were popular or infulential. Booo!

I think many of you are posting about "THE 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs".... NOT "VH1's 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs"
...Though "Cant Touch This" and "Get Low" ,as well as many many others on the list, are not great Hip-Hop songs, they were very influencial to the main stream and bringing Hip-Hop out to anybody who wanted to like it. These songs may not represent "Great Hip-Hop" but they did have a major impact on music history in the name of Hip-Hop. If hearing Mc Hammer or YinYang Twins on VH1 will somehow lead youth to discovering Gang Starr or Eric B. & Rakim.... well then, Thank you Hammer, YingYang Twins, and VH1!.... They should have called it "100 Biggest Hip-Hop Songs" or "100 Most Jiggy Jamz" ...whatever....oh well.

100 Best Hip Hop Songs I Have Ever Heard Until The End of 2008
(In No Particular Order)
This List Is Based On What I Feel To Be Classic Material That I Will Never Get Tired Of Listening To. Put This Playlist On Repeat.

Lets not forget this was a list the public voted for - so its not VH1's fault!

However, I agree with most of the points - there is a lean towards some commercial stuff and some crazy stuff left out;

Gangstarr
Group Home
Nine
Other Wu Tang tracks (Triumph, Protect your Neck, etc...)
KRS 1 solo stuff

However, overall the spread of artists is pretty good - it just seems the wrong songs were picked!

SORRY ASS LIST!!!!!!!
BUT WHY IS EVERYONE HATING ON 50s "IN DA CLUB" AND "HATE IT OR LOVE IT"
WHAT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND IS 50 CENT IS THE REASON HIP-HOP STILL HAS A CHANCE TO LIVE. EVERYONE LOVED "IN DA CLUB" WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT, EVEN YOU...SO DONT FRONT. "HATE IT OR LOVE IT" IS A CLASSIC JOINT.

Eric B & Rakim could and should have 3 or 4 of the top 10. Paid in Full at #24?!?? What??? And Stan is not even Eminem's best record. And Pac deserves a few more tracks on the list.

Yo VH1 needs to get 100 MC's, DJ's, and around the way Hip Hop Junkies from all over and various eras and let them hand in their personal favorites, tally them all up and by rounding them up, figure out which songs should make the list. That list by True is pretty dope by the way, both of them. I would swap some in the bottom list though.

Ya'll Missin The point. The List is songs that had huge success on either 1 level, or several. Sure there was songs that were flat out better, but did they have the meaning that those songs had? by meaning im talkin did it mean something FOR hip hop, not just to the people who listen to hip hop. Baby got back was a not a lyrical song at all..but if you walk into ANY big city club full of young white people, it will be playing loud ass hell at some point that night. LOL. And Get Low had the whole world listening, not just the states! They said SKEET on the radio..

This is is mediocre at best.

Add: Anything from Eminem, DMX, Ludacris, B.I.G, Wu-Tang Clan, Run-DMC, Eric B/Rakim, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Biggie, Tupac, Gangstarr, Ice Cube, Ice-T, Jay-Z, and....well a lot more I guess.

Remove: L'Trimm, "Get Low", J.J Fad, Roxanne, Missy Elliot, "The Humpty Dance", "Hot in Herre", "The Block Is Hot"

Put "Juicy" at #1! The other 99....pull them out of a hat and place em wherever.

This list was flawed but amusing. I also agree that certain artist should not have made the list and sometimes they didnt select the best song for an artist. This is why I found such list and awards shows as well to be meaningless. Since the people voting dont know anything the whole process is void. Last year I heard a count down that had Chingy listed above Rakim as best MC ever. I guess to many people under 25 voted.

Ok I have problems with this list from the get go and I have a couple of them I'd like to share...There's a HUGE problem with Big Pun getting snubbed because 'Twinz' on Deep Cover with Fat Joe is one of the sickest songs lyrically I've ever heard, and I'm not just saying that cause I'm Puerto Rican...Secondly, 'killing me softly' by The Fugees is barely even a rap song...Thirdly, 'Nas Is Like' is a classic, also a huge snub...Fourthly, 'Big Poppa' by BIGGIE is an amazing song on the same album as 'Juicy' and should be on this list and last but not least, why isn't 'Don't Sweat The Technique on the list?? Great song by Rakim

Man I don't care what anybody says, In Da Club was hot, everybody heard that song and it gave hip hop a revival boost when it neede it the most, nobody was paying attention to it until 50 came out with that album, and as far as the southern hip hop music, thank Ludacris and Get low for getting you on the map at all

When I saw this on TV, I was amazed that no Tupac song had been mentioned from 100-61. Crazy.

Songs I thought 2Pac would get him in easy:

Hail Mary
Unconditional Love
Changes
Trapped
Brendas Got A Baby
Keep Ya Head Up
I Get Around
So Many Tears
Dear Mama
California Love
How Do You Want It
Life Goes On
To Live and Die In LA
Until The End of Time
Thugz Mansion

How the fuck did only I Get Around get on the list?

This is bullshit. I like I Get Around, but I assumed at least California Love would have had to been on the list or Hail Mary, Changes, or Unconditonal Love.

Stupid list.

Lots of junk talked about VH1's list for good measure. However no one has mentioned the best rap/hip hop song ever here is my top 20.
1.Slam-Onyx. Its not even close. Are you kidding me? Do you really think there is something better than this!! Greatest song ever period. Have you seen the kind of stuff that goes on in the video #1 of all-time. Song just made everyone crazy. Watch Sticky Fingaz at "Comin thru with the scam" on the video and tell me this is not the best song of all-time.
2.Fakin Jax-INI. Songs says it all about hip hop. Listen to the lyrics it basically disses everbody and everything else. This is what hip hop is about.
3.Eric B is President. If you listened to Hot 97 in NY this is the song you always wanted Flex to play.
4.Southernplayalisticadillacfunkymusic-Outkast. Best song from the south ever.
5.Baknaffek-Das Efx. Most underrated song ever.
6.Incarcerated Scarfaces-Raekwon. This is what its all about.
7.I gotcha Opin (Remix)-Black Moon. Song is amazing.
8.Elevation-BUMS. Again what hip hop is all about.
9.Up Against the Wall-Group Home. Song is ridiculous.
10.Survival of the Fittest-Mobb Deep. This was always Mobb Deep's best.
11.Dream Shatterer-Big Pun. The good remix.
12.We ain't goin out like that-Cypress Hill. Baseline is riciculous.
13.The Most Beautifullest thing in the world-Keith Murray. Lyrics are the best.
14.Escape-Whodini. Even Whodini themselves said it.
15.Double Up-Camron. This song never gets credit. Go listen to it.
16.Ha -Juvenile. This is it right here.
17.Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz-Lost Boyz. Song is dope.
18.It ain't Hard to Tell-Nas. This is Nas at his best
19.Keep it Real-Milkbone. Has to be there.
20.Livin Proof-Group Home. Yes Group Home twice in the Top 20.

Jeru - Come Clean
Brand Nubain - Slow Down
Fab 5 - Lafleur Laflah Eshkoska

I guess those are on VH1's top 200 R&B list. Just like Fla did in '00, I demand a recount.

This is the worst representation of a compilation of hip hop songs. A anything from master p or anything commercial should not be on that list, like master p stuff what ever. This is another obvious example that VH1 doesn't know much about hip hop. Where is "New York State of Mind", wheres "Dead Presidents" and where's the beef songs at. "Either" Classic. They had no classics on this list. Juicy should at least be number 3. This list is crappy. The only thing this represents is that there is no substance or much thought behind this list. We also forget VH1 is a very White channel and they weren't going to get it right even with ice t and Chuck D on their show.

the hip hop list seemed pretty good to me but where is "this is how we do it" by montell jordan? over all i liked the list and i think that if hip hop artists would put as much soul into their music these days as they did back then it would be SO much better

When is the last time you read so many comments that all reached the same conclusion?? - that this list sucked moose cock!! What wack-ass people made up this list?? Even the #1 songs for each artist was suck-ass.. I love DMC, but "walk this way" was radio bullshit. Eric B is President instead of Paid in Full... Where is Mobb Deep?? VH1 owes an apology for wasting peoples time. fucking awful

OK.... I understand that a lot of these artists are on the list, BUT the order is whack and most of the tracks aren't even the best that the artist produced! And what the @#$%^& is up with Regulate @ #98 (definitely a Top 20) and Bone Thugs - Crossroads @ #33!!!!! Come on now.... First Hip-hop album to go platinum! Let alone TRIPLE PLATINUM and all because of that song!!!! #33?!?!?!?!?!?!
